John C. Nelson, M.D., M.P.H.
Dr. Nelson served as President of the American Medical Association from 2004 to 2005 and was on its Board of Trustees for more than 10 years. He has also been President of the Utah Medical Association, the Salt Lake County Medical Society, and the Collegium Aesculapium Foundation, a nonprofit organization for Mormon medical professionals. He is President Emeritus of Globus Relief, a nonprofit organization that channels surplus medical goods and equipment to charities around the world. In addition to his work with NIH, Dr. Nelson has been a member of the National Medicaid Advisory Committee, the national advisory committee to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the workgroup on the Oregon Medicaid Demonstration Project for the state’s Office of Technology Assessment, and the Prospective Payment Assessment Commission. He also served on the national advisory board for Strengthening Hospital Nursing, a joint project of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Pew Charitable Trusts. He has received many honors for his work, including a Distinguished Service Award from the University of Utah School of Medicine Alumni Association and the Light of Learning Award from the Utah State Office of Education. Dr. Nelson earned his M.D. and M.P.H. from the University of Utah School of Medicine. He and his wife, Linda, have been married for almost 40 years and are the parents of eight children and a growing contingency of grandchildren.

Dr. John C. Nelson is the Advisory Committee to the NIH Director Liaison to the COPR. He currently serves as the Medical Director of HealthInsight, the quality improvement organization for Utah. He is a board-certified obstetrician/gynecologist and staff physician at three hospitals in the Salt Lake City area and a clinical professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Dr. Nelson is a fellow and a diplomate of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and a fellow in the American College of Preventive Medicine. He is a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps and served in Vietnam.
